Clark Atlanta University is a private, historically black university in Atlanta, Georgia. It was formed in 1988 with the consolidation of Clark College and Atlanta University. Clark Atlanta University is a member of the United Negro College Fund. The university聮s main campus houses 37 buildings on 126 acres and is about 1.5 miles from the center of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. Clark Atlanta University was formed by the consolidation of Atlanta University, which offered only graduate degrees, and Clark College, a four-year undergraduate institution oriented to the liberal arts. Before consolidation, Atlanta University, which was founded in 1865 by the American Missionary Association, was the nation's oldest graduate institution serving a mostly African-American student body. Clark College was founded in 1869 by the Methodist Episcopal Church, which later became the United Methodist Church. The university provides athletic opportunities for men in baseball, basketball, football, and track/field & cross-country. Clark Atlanta University provides athletic opportunities for women in softball, basketball, tennis, track/field & cross-country, and volleyball. Clark Atlanta University is part of the Atlanta University Center, which is the world聮s largest consortium of black colleges and universities. Its partner institutions in the group are the Interdenominational Theological Center, Morehouse College, the Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. Students from these campuses often participate in joint classes and social events. Clark Atlanta University has approximately 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and it has a student to faculty ratio of 17:1.
